Circuit => Variable List

Project Editor Menu - Circuit Menu - Variable List dialog box

Geometry Project

Selecting Circuit => Variable List opens the Variable List dialog box which allows you to create and edit all the variables in your circuit at once. Each variable has a text entry box for its name and for its present value or defining equation.

An Information button, pictured below, appears next to each variable. Clicking on the button opens a window with information about where the variable is being used in the project. If the icon has a strike mark through it, then the variable is not presently in use and may be deleted or the name may be changed.

variable_info_button.gif - Variable information button which indicates that the variable is presently in use.

variable_info_no_button.gif - Variable information button which indicates that the variable is not presently in use in the project and may be deleted or have its name changed.

To edit a variable, click in either the Variable name or Value text entry, then click on the Edit button. Clicking on the Edit button opens the Add/Edit Variable dialog box which allows you to edit the variable. When that dialog box is closed, the variable's listing is updated in this window.

To delete a variable, click in either the Variable name or Value text entry, then click on the Delete button.  This action is not permitted if this variable is presently being used in an equation or referenced in your circuit.

Clicking on the New button opens the Add/Edit Variable dialog box which allows you to define a new variable. When that dialog box is closed, the new variable is added to the list above.

Sorting

There are four buttons that appear on the right side of the variable list that allow you to control the order in which the variables appear in the list. Clicking on any of these buttons affects the position of the presently selected variable in the following manner:

sort_but_top.gif Clicking on this button moves the selected variable to the top of the list.

sort_but_up.gif Clicking on this button moves the selected variable up one position in the list.

sort_but_down.gif Clicking on this button moves the selected variable down one position in the list.

sort_but_bottom.gif Clicking on this button moves the selected variable to the bottom of the list.

You may also click on the Sort button to open the Sort Options dialog box which allows you to control the order in which variables appear in the list. For details, click on the link.

Netlist Project

Selecting Circuit => Variable List opens the Variable List dialog box which allows you to create and edit variables for your netlist project.

Click on the New button to add a new variable. Two text entry boxes; one for the variable name and the other for the nominal value. Enter the desired name for the new variable in the Variable text entry box and the desired nominal value in the Nominal Value text entry box. Once these variables are created, you may use them to define the value of modeled elements in your netlist, such as resistors, capacitors, inductors and transmission lines. In other words, the modeled element uses the present nominal value of the variable for the netlist analysis. This dialog box allows you to change the value of all your variables at once rather then having to edit each modeled element entry in your netlist.

Creating variables allows you to perform an parameter sweep or optimization on your netlist.

If you wish to remove a variable, click in one of the text entry boxes for that variable, then click on the delete button.
